[CONTROL]

Ashleigh D’Antonio & Mia Van Den Bos

[control] is a presentation of the experimental drawing practices of emerging (their word, not mine) artists Ashleigh D’Antonio and Mia Van den Bos.

Ashleigh D’Antonio and Mia Van den Bos’ works explore the use of self-imposed limitations that function to remove ultimate artistic control over the end product of the works.

Process is highlighted and the artists utilise aspects of sound, video, existing imagery and performance ((lasers)) to create their drawings. Themes that surface include the power dynamics in collaborative relationships, cyberculture, communication and the nature of drawing.

DOUBLE MINT GUM

Group Show

Double MINT Gum is a collection of photography, film, installation and sculpture by artists Lauren Abineri, Georgia Banks, Marlaina Read and Gemma McKenzie-Booth.

Exploring the altering of flesh and the unsettling yet familiar feelings evoked by the human body (in particular the female) Abineri, Banks and McKenzie-Booth collapse the formwork surrounding eroticism, the grotesque and sensuality.

Marlaina Read invests her practice in making liminal space through immersive and meditative works.

All four artists will be producing a site-specific installation housed in the garage of MINT Studios.

PONY TIME

Group Show

For this year’s big group exhibition what we did was we took four ideas and mashed them together in an abandoned shop and called it PONY TIME.

We also bought 30 cartons of heavily discounted champagne. HURRAY PONY TIME!

Artists include:

LOU VODIC & MARGARET LLOYD

Wild Places is about loneliness, contemplation and the sublime. Through a mix of 2D, video and performance work, Vodic and Lloyd explore the effect of wild places on the individual.

CHRIS CALLAGHAN & COURTNEY RODGERS

A collection of photography best described as “imaginary representations of space and the figure through play and the distribution of formal structure.” What could be simpler!

EMMA NORTHEY & STEPHEN ROEDEL

Northey and Roedel began their audio-visual collaboration in 2006 and have since collaborated on numerous projects together for art galleries, film festivals and artist run spaces. They work analogue and digital aesthetics into unique, deliriant episodes. “Don’t Panic it’s just Satanic.”

CHRIS ARBLASTER

Local designer, photographer and all-round party-fixture Chris Arblaster presents some heavy disposable camera nostalgia.

It’s at the old Snow & Surf shop, 187 Rundle Street (next to the old Big Star Records, opposite Synagogue Place).

Afterwards we invite you to GO ALL THE WAY WITH BRAD on a surprise-filled walking tour, ending up at the Ancient World party on Hindley Street.

Brought to you by Format Collective, Renew Adelaide, cheap champagne and PONIES.

TWENTY ONE NIGHTS IN JULY BOOK LAUNCH

Dr Ianto Ware

Format Press’ first publication has been revamped and reissued by a more prestiguous but equally as foolish book publisher

The book publishers press release reads something like Part love letter to the humble bicycle, part history of the Tour de France,Twenty-One Nights in July reveals how cycling transcended mere sport to become a philosophy for the modern age.”

Written by the guy who only ever had very expensive cheese and bottles of moderately priced gin in his fridge

To be held at Hello, Yes as part of the DIY Market

Z-GRADE TRASH MOVIE MARATHON

Artyom Zinoviev

A 12-hour marathon celebration of low-budget schlock, video trash, and so-bad-its-good unintentional comedy. Come for the entire run, or come for just a few movies, in a movie marathon reminiscent of the grindhouse cinemas of old!

Handpicked by local cult and trash cinema connoisseur Art Zinoviev, these six forgotten nuggets of trash will both delight and confound you in their astoundingly bad special effects, acting, dialogue and plot. Laugh along at inept virtual reality kickboxers, colourful flippy ninjas, insatiable alien blobs and so much more, at MAD MOUSE ALLEY on MONDAY OCTOBER 6 (Labour Day long weekend)!

If you enjoy the unintentional comedic brilliance of well-known films such as Troll 2, The Room, Sharknado et al, then let Format Festival and Art introduce you to the wonderfully shitty world of ’80s and ’90s straight-to-video goodness, played on much-loved ex-rental VHS tapes.
